Berry Street construction to end soon; other campus construction underway

The almost two-year-long construction project on Berry Street will soon come to a close, director of major projects Harold Leeman said.

“Berry Street construction was supposed to be finished by the third week of March. The roadwork was finished by that time but all the finishing landscape was not complete,” he said.

Leeman said he thinks the City of Fort Worth considered the project to be technically complete in March and expects a finish date before Memorial Day.

The Berry Street renovation includes narrower streets, on-street parking, widened sidewalks, enhanced crosswalks and medians, roadway and pedestrian lighting, street furniture and trees and landscaping.

Construction is also going on in the Library Commons and on Stadium Drive.

Stadium Drive construction is behind schedule and work in the Library Commons has recently begun, Leeman said.

The second project on Stadium Drive, due to be completed near the end of April, was halted per Leeman’s request.

“I asked them to stop working due to finals and [student] move out and complete it after graduation,” he said.

According to a prior TCU 360 story, the work concerns construction of a new water line from the BLUU to Midcourt Drive.

Leeman said he expects all Stadium Drive construction workers to be off of TCU’s campus by the middle of next week after an overlay of asphalt is put into place.

As for the Library Commons, the university recently began construction on an academic building with “classrooms, offices for Child Development and the Energy Institute,” Leeman said.

He said the building is projected to be finished by July 2014.

An addition, the Bass building, where the Harris College of Nursing and Health Sciences is housed, is under construction in the Bass parking lot.

The building will have “classrooms, offices and seminar rooms,” Leeman said.

Leeman said an overlay of asphalt in Frog Alley up Stadium Drive and Bellaire Drive is also in the works, set to begin in mid-July.
