TCU's swimming and diving team is teaching children to “Learn to Swim the Olympic Way” throughout the summer through swimming classes.

Started by head swim team coach Richard Sybesma, this summer marks the 25th year of the camp on TCU's campus. Sybesma said the program has grown over the years to about 300 enrollees.

For the summer sessions, Sybesma has enlisted both students and swim team members to assist in coaching the classes.

“The campers are getting the best possible coaching out there,” Sybesma said.

The classes take place Monday through Thursday. Each camp session is two weeks long, and the entire program lasts for 10 weeks.

The first session, comprised of after school lessons, lasts from May 13 to June 6. The second session, which has lessons in the morning, lasts from June 10 to July 18.

The cost is $150.00 per child per session, which includes insurance and a t-shirt. Participants may register in the swimming office at the Rec Center with cash, check or online payment.

Sybesma said the campers are split up into three groups: beginner, intermediate and advanced.

The beginner group is for children who are nervous about the water and are just beginning to learn how to swim. The intermediate level is designed for children who already know how to swim the length of the pool correctly.

The advanced level is a pre-competitive level where children have mastered all of the four strokes—freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly—and also know how to do flips and turns.

Susan Bogard, a parent of one of the campers, chose the TCU camp because of Sybesma’s stellar reputation.

“Sybesma has a great reputation as a university swim coach and knows to progressively put the kids in different groups,” Bogard said.
