TCU football wrapped up camp on Saturday, but the most pressing question, who will start at quarterback for the Horned Frogs, won’t be answered until Aug. 31 when the team plays LSU.
Head coach Gary Patterson remains as tight-lipped as ever on whether Casey Pachall or Trevone Boykin will start against the Tigers. The coach said Sunday that he wants LSU’s coaching staff to have to prepare for both quarterbacks.
Pachall, who threw 10 touchdowns and one interception in four games for TCU last year, is a more traditional pocket passer. Boykin, who was thrust into the starting role in October after Pachall was arrested under suspicion of DWI, is the more athletic option. He ran for three scores and 417 yards in 12 games last season.
Patterson has repeatedly emphasized that he feels the team can win with either passer. He said Boykin’s passing has greatly improved and that the young quarterback has pushed Pachall to become better. He said at Big 12 Media Days that if he feels both quarterbacks are equal, he will go with the more experienced Pachall.
Final scrimmage notes:
Patterson said the team’s final scrimmage, which took place Saturday, went well, even though it wasn’t as long or as physical as the one that took place Tuesday.
“I think we’re a tired football team,” Patterson said
Fatigue is to be expected. The team has been practicing twice a day since Aug. 1. Sunday was the team’s first day off since the beginning of camp.
The team avoided injuries and accomplished what it needed to during the scrimmage despite the fatigue, according to Patterson.
“Now we turn our attention to LSU,” he said.
New uniforms to be unveiled:
Patterson recently tweeted out pictures of the cleats and gloves the Frogs will wear against LSU. He said Sunday that more of the uniform will be revealed this Friday.
The cleats and gloves are both a departure from TCU’s typical color scheme, with red accents accompanying the usual purple and black.
When Patterson tweeted the picture of the cleats, he talked about the “red of the eyes” coming out, an allusion to how horned lizards are able to shoot blood out of their eyes. Patterson said on Twitter that the team will wear the new uniform more than once this season.
