Taking ranked opponents to double-overtime is becoming somewhat of a habit for the TCU women’s soccer team.

An energetic home crowd fought the rain and packed Garvey-Rosenthal stadium as the Horned Frogs battled the elements to tie No. 14 Denver 1-1 after two overtime periods.

TCU head coach Eric Bell said that although the team was unable to capitalize on late chances to win he was pleased with the outcome.

“It’s a pretty good result against a pretty good team. Denver is pretty good and I think we fought for an entire 110 minutes,” Bell said. “I am very proud of the performance, and the effort, and the fight.”

TCU used several early breakaways to test Denver’s stellar senior goalie Cassidy Rey. Coming into the game, Rey had saved 38 of 41 shots against her on the year.

Twenty minutes in, TCU freshman forward Michelle Prokof scored the game’s first goal when she fooled Rey, shooting back across her body to misdirect the diving Pioneer goaltender.

TCU senior midfielder Maddie Payne took a cross in front of the Denver goal and gave the ball to a cutting Prokof who finished the play for her third goal of the season, giving TCU the early lead.

Prior to Prokof’s goal, Rey had not been scored on since Sept. 1.

Denver junior defender Sam Harder answered seven minutes later when she shot a 25-yard free kick over a wall of TCU defenders, banking the ball off the right corner of the crossbar and in, well out of the reach of TCU freshman goalie Shannon Coffer.

The Horned Frogs had a chance to regain the lead with 12 minutes left in the second half when TCU sophomore defender Bobbi Clemmer’s corner kick dropped perfectly into the traffic in front of the Denver goal.

TCU had three shots at punching the ball in, the first on a header by senior defender Maddy Courvoisier. Courvoisier’s shot deflected of the Denver defense and right to sophomore midfielder Madeline Hamm whose shot was denied by Rey. TCU sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Koch took the rebound, but her shot was denied by the Pioneer defense as well.

TCU had multiple other chances to score late in the second half, but failed to bypass the waiting arms of Rey.

The Frogs were unable to finish the game with a minute left in the first overtime when when Rey slipped and fell down with the ball in front of her own goal.

Then, with seconds remaining in the first overtime period, Courvoisier found herself on a breakaway and shot past Rey from 15 yards out. However, Courvoisier’s shot deflected off the left goal post, sending the teams to a second overtime.

The second overtime also failed to render a goal, as fatigue set in and both teams wore down.

The Horned Frogs have gone to double-overtime with all three ranked teams they have played this year. The Frogs tied LSU early in the season and defeated Arkansas in their last match.

“It’s nice to play teams that are ranked,” Bell said. “These girls are trying to figure out how to play at that level all the time.”

“The growing up part will be if we can have a similar performance on Sunday to what we had tonight.”

TCU, now 3-4-2, next takes the field at home against Central Arkansas. The game kicks off at 1 p.m. at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium.
