So, what ever happened to all those former Horned Frogs now playing in the NFL? Here's an inside look at how a few of them are faring in the current season through week four.
Pro Bowl quarterback Andy Dalton struggled last Sunday, failing to throw a single touchdown pass in the Cincinnati Bengals’ 17-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns.
Dalton, who was sacked twice, finished the game 23-for-42, passing for 206 yards and one interception.
Dalton and the Bengals piled up only 266 yards of total offense in the game against the Browns. Cincinnati was coming off of a stellar fourth-quarter comeback win against the Green Bay Packers in week three, but couldn’t find their groove against the Browns.
This is Dalton’s third season starting in the NFL with the Bengals, and he has thrown for 1,003 yards on the season.
Dalton will face former Horned Frog teammates Marcus Cannon and Josh Boyce when the Bengals host the 4-0 New England Patriots on Oct.6.
Boyce, a rookie wide receiver selected by New England in the fourth round, caught a 24-yard pass in the Patriots’ 30-23 win against the Atlanta Falcons to notch his first NFL career reception.
Linebacker Jerry Hughes had little statistical impact on the Buffalo Bills’ 23-20 win against the Baltimore Ravens, but has nine combined tackles on the season.
This is Hughes’ fourth year in the league, but his first with the Bills. He was traded to the team this spring by the Indianapolis Colts.
Jeremy Kerley, wide receiver for the New York Jets, had four receptions for 65 yards in the team's 38-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans.
Kerley, who sat out week two after suffering a concussion in the season opener, has so far had nine receptions for 135 yards in his third year with the Jets.
Arizona Cardinals Pro Bowl linebacker Daryl Washington is expected to hit the field for the first time this season on Oct. 6 against the Carolina Panthers. He recorded nine sacks and 108 solo tackles last season in his 16 starts.
Washington, who is in his fourth season with the Cardinals, received a four-game suspension after violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
Linebacker David Hawthorne is doing well for the New Orleans Saints. He had two solo and three assisted tackles on Sept. 30 against the Miami Dolphins. Hawthorne has 18 combined tackles on the season.
Hawthorne is in his sixth NFL season, but only his second with the Saints. He played for the Seattle Seahawks from 2008-2011.
Linebacker Jason Phillips is on the Philadelphia Eagles’ injured reserve list after suffering a season-ending ACL tear during training camp. This is Phillips’ first season with the Eagles. He had 22 combined tackles last season with the Carolina Panthers.
Other notable rookies are Atlanta Falcons’ defensive end Stansly Maponga and Philadelphia Eagles’ running back Matthew Tucker, who made the eight-man practice squad.
Skye Dawson, who was picked up by the Washington Redskins, was released after preseason and not placed on their practice squad.
The Horned Frogs have 14 former players active in the NFL.
