With six weeks of the 2013 NFL season completed, it is time to take a glance at how some former Horned Frogs performed this weekend.
After struggling in his previous two starts, 2011 graduate and Cincinnati Bengals’ starting quarterback Andy Dalton turned things around this weekend in a thrilling 27-24 overtime victory against the Buffalo Bills. Dalton, who failed to throw a single touchdown pass in his previous two outings, threw for 337 yards with three touchdown passes. He also rushed for an additional 17 yards. Dalton’s solid performance helped the division-leading Bengals improve to 4-2, and stay one game ahead of the Baltimore Ravens for control of the AFC North.
Playing against Dalton for the Bills was former TCU linebacker Jerry Hughes. Hughes recorded five tackles and six assists for a total of 11 combined tackles in the loss to Cincinnati.
In the Meadowlands, Jets’ wide receiver Jeremy Kerley struggled as the team’s offense sputtered in a 19-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. A week after putting up 68 yards and recording his first touchdown of the season in a victory over the Atlanta Falcons, the 2011 draftee managed only two receptions for a mere 19 yards. Kerley’s struggles this week were not a surprise considering Pittsburgh’s defense has allowed the fifth fewest receptions this season.
Despite graduating from TCU earlier this year as the all-time leader in TCU touchdown receptions, New England Patriots’ wide receiver Josh Boyce had to watch Tom Brady’s last-second heroics from the sideline on Sunday, listed as inactive just prior to start of the game. Boyce has had little to show for this season, only making one reception for a total of 24 yards.
The only Frog appearing in that game was New Orleans Saints’ linebacker David Hawthorne, who recorded seven tackles.
At Candlestick Park, two-time pro bowler and Arizona Cardinals’ linebacker Daryl Washington had a minimal impact in a 32-20 loss against the San Francisco 49ers after making 9 tackles the previous week against the Carolina Panthers. The 2010 second round draft pick, who was forced to play with a minor knee injury on Sunday, recorded only two tackles in the game.
