A new student organization on campus is working to attract greater membership in order to raise awareness about hunger issues in the Fort Worth community.
Frogs for Food, the product of a former TCU student’s BNSF Next Generation Leadership Program Legacy Project, currently has about 25 members. Frogs for Food president and sophomore business major Jessica Nailor said she hopes for growth throughout the semester.
Nailor said Frogs for Food not only works to educate campus about hunger issues, but “also to mobilize students to take action to combat this issue.”
Sophomore political science major Christine Moore serves as membership vice-president for Frogs for Food. Moore said she initially joined the organization to support Nailor, who is her roommate.
However, Moore said she found a passion for raising awareness about hunger after becoming more educated on the facts through her position in the organization.
“When starvation is brought up people generally think about impoverished countries such as many third-world countries in Africa. In reality, this happens in the Fort Worth area and all around the U.S.,” Moore wrote in an email.
Frogs for Food has already packed their schedule for next semester. The organization will be participating in the Tunnel of Oppression, Hunger Week and also volunteering in the DFW area at least once a month. Nailor said she is also in talks with the Tarrant County Food Bank to have students get involved with the their mobile food pantry program and the community garden.
“We live on a campus of excess, often unaware of the poverty that so closely surrounds us,” Nailor wrote. “Fort Worth is an incredible, supportive community for TCU and I believe it is so important that we give back to it.”
