The brand Texas Tea will create limited-edition bottles featuring Jerry Hughes and Robert Griffin III to get people excited for the Baylor-TCU rivalry game this week.
Hughes and Griffin garnered attention as All-Americans at TCU and Baylor respectively. Now, both men play in the NFL-Hughes at linebacker for the Buffalo Bills and Griffin at quarterback for the Washington Redskins.
The company also made a limited edition bottle for the UT-OU rivalry game seeking out former players from each team: Brian Orakpo for Texas and Adrian Peterson for Oklahoma. Both Orakpo and Peterson are native Texans who currently play in the NFL.
Because this special edition bottle for the UT-OU game saw so much success, “we felt like we could take it into the TCU and Baylor rivalry as well,” Hughes said.
“[Texas Tea] was started a couple of years ago by two guys from Texas,” Hughes said. “They’re actually from the Houston area which is close to where I am from.”
But it is not just his face on the bottle or his Texas roots that connect Hughes to the tea company.
“It was brought up to me as a potential investment opportunity,” he said. “I was already purchasing the tea, so I just wanted to jump on board.”
Texas Tea has only been around for a couple years. Although it’s fairly new, Hughes said the company is expanding at a fast rate.
Hughes said the goal for the company and its investors is to share the tea with the people of Texas, as well as the nation, and to show how well this product has been put together.
According to the Texas Tea Facebook page, Hughes’ limited-edition bottle can be found in local grocery stores across Texas, such as Central Market, Market Street and Whole Foods Market.
Hughes wouldn’t divulge any specifics about the flavor of the tea.
“You’re just going to have to pick it up at the store to get a taste and find out,” he said.
