Frogs help Schlossnagle collect 500th win

Head coach Jim Schlossnagle earned his 500th win as head coach after TCU beat UTSA on Sunday.

The No. 19 Horned Frogs beat the Roadrunners 5-1, helping Schlossnagle hit the milestone in his 13th year as head coach.

Tyler Alexander (1-1) had his second start of the season, pitching for a career-high of six innings. The freshman allowed just one run on five hits, walked one, hit a batter and struck out two, according to GoFrogs.com. Sunday’s victory was the first of his career.

Trey Teakell also had his first career save. The junior retired all nine batters he faced.

UTSA took an early lead, scoring one run during the first. John Welborn led off the game with a base hit and moved to second on an error. Jesse Baker doubled in Welborn, putting the Roadrunners up 1-0.

TCU quickly took back the lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Cody Jones led off the first with a base hit. Connor Castellano walked and Boomer White hit an infield single, loading the bases. Derek Odell hit a single, getting the Frogs their first score of the game. Jerrick Suiter beat out a potential double play, giving the Frogs a 2-1 lead.

The Frogs gained two more runs during the second. Keaton Jones started off with a base hit and then back-to-back walks loaded the bases. White lined a single to bring in the third run and Kevin Cron grounded out, making it a 4-1 game.

The Roadrunners had two errors in the third, enabling the Frogs to get their final run. Keaton Jones reached a two-out, two-base error and scored on a base hit from Kyle Bacak.

Alexander and Teakell retired a combined 16 batters during the game.

The Frogs’ next game will be against UT Arlington at home. The game is set for 6:30 Tuesday night.
