The TCU women’s basketball team heads to Boulder, Colo., Wednesday for the opening round of the 2014 Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
The Frogs will face the Colorado Buffaloes (17-14, 6-12 Pac-12) in TCU’s first trip to the postseason since the 2010-11 season. The team finished with an 18-14 record overall and went 8-10 in conference play this season.
Former head coach Jeff Mittie will not coach the team in the tournament as he’s resigned and accepted a position at Kansas State. Associate head coach Brian Ostermann will take over for the remainder of the season.
The last time TCU took the court, they lost to No. 7 West Virginia (29-4, 16-2 Big 12) at the Big 12 Championship 67-59 following a first-round win over Texas Tech (6-24, 0-18 Big 12)
Sophomore guard Zahna Medley was named to the Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team last weekend. Medley averaged 25.0 points and hit eight three-pointers in TCU’s two Big 12 Championship games.
Led by forwards Jen Reese and Arielle Roberson, the Buffaloes have a team full of size. Nine of Colorado’s 13 players stand six feet or taller.
That size also contributes to success on the boards as the Buffaloes average 42.1 rebounds per game this season. They also average almost 69 points per game, which is eighth best in the Pac-12.
The Frogs, on the other hand, average only 36.6 boards per game, which was seventh best in the Big 12 this season.
TCU actually met up with Colorado in 2008 during the Frogs’ first-ever WNIT appearance. The game went into overtime before TCU fell to the Buffs 96-90.
The Frogs haven’t won a WNIT game since, losing 78-74 to Oral Roberts in 2011 in TCU’s only other WNIT appearance.
Wednesday night’s game is set to be broadcast on FSN. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. from the Coors Events Center.
