The TCU Hispanic Alumni Association will host the Greg Trevino Memorial Scholarship Fun Golf Tournament on Sunday at the Lost Creek Golf Club.
Originally a fundraiser for the association, the tournament was named after Trevino after he died from a car accident in 2008.
Trevino, the former director of Inclusiveness and Intercultural services, was a founding member of the TCU Hispanic Alumni Association. He served for four years prior to his death, said Luis Flores, president of the TCU Hispanic Alumni Association.
John Hamilton, the director of International Services at TCU, said he uses the tournament to celebrate his friend’s life.
“When Greg was here, Greg and I played golf every week. Now I play maybe two or three times a year,” Hamilton said.
Trevino’s memorial scholarship fund of $3,500 was awarded to two students this academic year. On average, the organization is able to award anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000 to students.
The group’s future goal for the fundraiser is to award a full scholarship. Other goals include acting as mentors, promoting cultural awareness and encouraging “communication and cooperation among the Hispanic alumni and Texas Christian University,” according to its bylaws.
In addition to the golf tournament, the Association hosts wine tastings, speakers and raffles for the scholarship fund.
There are 44 players registered, but Flores expects more will register at the event. The event faced possible cancellation last week due to lack of participants.
“One thing we have noticed for golf tournaments is that people don’t sign up ahead of time like they used to,” Flores said.
Hamilton said he was stunned upon hearing about the risk of cancelling the event. He responded by sending out an email to TCU faculty and staff urging them to sign up.
“I think one of our worst traits is forgetting things. We tend to go with the memory of the month or the tragedy of the month,” Hamilton said.
Online registration has closed but players can still register at the event for $100. Prizes will be given to the best three scores, the longest drive and the winner in a closest to the pin competition. Goodie bags will be given to all participants.
The tournament will start at 8 a.m.
