For many students, Fort Worth breweries have become the new weekend hotspots. Here’s a list of three local breweries and two other Texas breweries to check out.
Rahr and Sons
Rahr & Sons Brewing Company is just four miles from TCU’s campus. For $10, get a tour of the brewery and a Rahr pint glass for beer samples. You may be lucky enough to get a tour by founder Fritz Rahr. Tours are hosted Wednesdays and Fridays. Wednesday tours may not seem ideal, but crowds are much smaller and the brewers put specialty beers on tap just for these tours. Rahr has also partnered with local, family-owned Fort Worth restaurants to provide food for purchase at the brewery. Tours are Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Martin House
Also located in Fort Worth is Martin House Brewery, which is just seven miles from TCU. Every Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m., visitors can wander around the warehouse and see the brewery equipment. At 4:30 p.m., there is a 20-minute tour of the brewery. Enjoy some outdoor games, food trucks and live music while admiring a view of downtown and the Trinity River. For just $10, you get a pint glass to keep and three pint samples. Popular beers include Day Break, The Imperial Texan, River House, Pretzel Stout and Gateway XPA.

For $10, visitors get a 45-minute tour of the brewery, a Revolver glass, and four 8-ounce samples of their most popular beer selections. On Saturdays, the brewery hosts a live band. Food, such as barbecue, is available for purchase as well. Tours are available between noon and 3 p.m. on Saturdays only. Best sellers include Blood & Honey, High Brass and Revolver Bock.

Franconia
The Franconia Brewing Company is located in McKinney, Texas, 63 miles from Fort Worth. Franconia opened in early 2008, and the current brew master comes from a long history of German brewers. The brewery has one scheduled tour at 11 a.m. every Saturday that lasts about two hours. For $5 per person, you get an exclusive look into the beer-making process, as well as samples of their various beers. Popular beers include Kolsch, Dunkel and Wheat and are now available in bottles.

Shiner
If you find yourself on a road trip to Houston, make sure to stop at the Shiner Brewery. Located 267 miles away in Shiner, Texas, the brewery has been producing beer since 1909. It is named the Spoetzl Brewery after its founder, Kosmos Spoetzl. Visitors can take free tours Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Included with the tour are “tasting tokens,” which are exchanged for small samples of their popular beers on tap.
