A fire engine roared off and children on red, white and blue decorated bikes, scooters … and others in toy cars followed suit.

It all declared the beginning of the Independence Day parade put on by the Tanglewood, Overton Park and Overton West Neighborhood Associations.

Two-and-a-half -year-old Adelaide Elliot waited with her grandmother for the parade to begin inside her Radio Flyer wagon in the shade. Nearby, seventy-eight- year -old John Perryman sat curbside in his lawn chair offering a thumbs up as two monster vehicles rolled up side by side.

The trucks were two of the many vehicles joining the parade. A vintage Volkswagen van, an old, yellow Ford pickup, a festive golf cart and an antique tractor were among the others.

The lineup began at 8:30 a.m. allowing neighbors to share smiles and handshakes before the parade kicked off at 9 a.m. The whole thing ended with a block party on Chaparral Lane with bounce houses, a Central Market food truck, and free water and ice cream for everyone.
