TCU football head coach Gary Patterson wasted no time in addressing his quarterback situation Tuesday at the first media conference of the 2014 season.

“We’re playing both quarterbacks, any other questions?” Patterson said.

Patterson added that he knows who the starter will be on Saturday, but won’t reveal who’s taking the first snap until he runs out onto the field.

Junior quarterback Trevone Boykin addressed the inevitable question with comedy, pointing to senior safety Sam Carter and suggesting that the defensive captain should take the first snap against Samford.

Boykin and senior transfer Matt Joeckel seemed comfortable with the idea that they will both debut the new Air Raid offense on Saturday and each quarterback stressed that the competition is productive.

“Matt and I bring the best out of each other,” Boykin said. “It’s good to have us competing.”

Any TCU fans hoping to see Joeckel line up as the quarterback and Boykin at wide receiver will be disappointed, as Boykin said he hasn’t taken any reps at wideout in practice.

Joeckel, who backed up NFL quarterbacks Ryan Tannehill and Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M, finished his degree in December and wants to impress in his final year of eligibility.

“I hope to get my last shot here at TCU,” Joeckel said. “I have nothing to lose. I don’t have my degree to worry about, so I’m 100% football and want to help this program win.”

Carter added that regardless of who is playing quarterback, the offense will be fast, explosive and quarterback-friendly.

Boykin said that the new Air Raid offense stresses ball placement, and he has learned a lot from working with new co-offensive coordinators Doug Meacham and Sonny Cumbie.

When given all the different possibilities for his playing time on Saturday, Boykin just sat back and smiled.

“I’ve been thrown into the fire before, so nothing is going to surprise me,” Boykin said. “But I’ll never quit, never give up, and I’ll do anything to help this team win.”
