The TCU defense forced five turnovers and wide receiver Josh Doctson hauled in two touchdowns in a 30-7 dismantling of Minnesota on Saturday afternoon.
The Horned Frogs scored 20 of their 30 points off of Golden Gopher turnovers, with safeties Sam Carter, Derrick Kindred and Chris Hackett all recording interceptions.
The junior Doctson had two touchdowns for the first time in his TCU career, including a one-handed grab in the back corner of the end zone that Gary Patterson would later call “unbelievable.” He caught six balls for 64 yards on the day.
Quarterback Trevone Boykin had 92 yards rushing and 258 yards passing, distributing the ball to 10 different receivers. He threw two touchdowns and one interception.
Linebacker Paul Dawson led the team with 15 tackles, his sixth career game with more than 10 tackles. He also forced and recovered a fumble in the victory.
Junior running back B.J. Catalon scored his second touchdown of the 2014 season on a 1-yard dive in the second quarter.
Kicker Jaden Oberkrom was perfect on the day, going 3-for-3 on his field goal attempts of 46, 45 and 37 yards.
Kindred also had a big game, recovering a fumble in addition to his interception. His eight tackles were good for second best on the team.
A total of 43,958 were in attendance on Saturday, including a packed student section that Gary Patterson lauded after the game.
“The student section was unbelievable, but I’m thinking if you’re not in the stadium by the time we score our first touchdown you can’t come in,” Patterson said.
The Horned Frogs have another bye week next week before an Iron Skillet showdown at SMU on Sept. 27.
“Our guys would rather be playing than to have another off week with me, I can tell you that,” Patterson said. “But our goal is to be 3-0 coming into conference [play.]”
