TCU will retain the Iron Skillet for a third straight season after a 56-0 thrashing of the SMU Mustangs Saturday afternoon.
The TCU defense stifled SMU’s offense all day long, holding the Mustangs to 245 total yards and sacking SMU quarterbacks Garrett Krstich and Matt Davis nine times.
Quarterback Trevone Boykin threw four touchdowns and rushed for two more in the lopsided victory.
The Frogs took only two plays to score their first touchdown of the day, as Boykin scampered for a 27-yard touchdown run up the middle.
TCU has scored a touchdown on its first possession in every game this season.
Junior wide receiver Deante’ Gray had a career day, catching two touchdowns on a career-high six receptions for 96 yards.
Running back B.J. Catalon ran for 114 yards and a touchdown, his first career 100-yard rushing game and third touchdown on the year.
Boykin also threw touchdown passes to junior Josh Doctson and freshman Desmon White.
SMU was close to scoring its second touchdown of the season on two separate occasions, but a TCU goal-line stand at the 1-yard line and a replay review negated both opportunities.
Defensive end James McFarland forced two fumbles in the victory, and freshman cornerback Nick Orr picked off Krstich for the first interception of his career.
Senior quarterback Matt Joeckel entered the game in the fourth quarter and led the Horned Frogs on an 85-yard drive that resulted in a blocked Jaden Oberkrom field goal.
Oberkrom missed his only other attempt in the game, a 45-yarder that was wide right in the first quarter.
Joeckel added a touchdown on his next drive, completing a 25-yard pass to freshman wide receiver Charlie Reid.
Joeckel’s second touchdown of his TCU career ended the scoring at 56-0, the Frogs’ first shutout of the 2014 campaign.
The Horned Frogs improve to 3-0 heading into conference play. They take on fourth-ranked Oklahoma at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
