TCU will host a panel dialogue and discussion on Thursday about the shooting of African-American teenager Michael Brown.
Brown was fatally shot in August by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
The panelists for the event consist of two TCU professors and a retired Tarrant County judge, Maryellen Hicks.
Emily Farris, an assistant professor in the political science department, is one of the panelists for the forum.
Farris said the panelists will discuss the shooting’s impact, the protests and the community turmoil in its aftermath in particular. The panelists will also consider more broadly, the topics of: race, police, politics, citizenship rights, and leadership.
“[The forum] is not just a case study of what happened [in Ferguson] but it’s about being able to bring it here and say ‘how is this relevant to our own lives?’” said Leslie Chanthaphasouk, coordinator of student success and outreach for inclusiveness and intercultural services.
Chanthaphasouk said that these issues affect a majority of students she works with on campus. She thinks this event is a great opportunity for TCU students to acknowldege that this type of thing still happens and see that there are opportunities to discuss these issues.
“By holding a community conversation on Ferguson, we hope to educate our community about the many complex issues that are involved,” Farris said. “In doing so, we can encourage some reflection on the issues and ways in which we can address the problems Ferguson poses for the country.”
The event is open to everyone in the Fort Worth community. It will be held at 6 p.m. in Scharbauer Hall.
