TCU women’s soccer earned its first Big 12 win of the season in dominating fashion Friday night, defeating Texas 3-1.

“I think our kids were pretty fired up to play today,” head coach Eric Bell said. “We talked about work energy and work rate and whatnot. And I think for 90 minutes they worked really, really hard.”

Junior midfielder Makenzie Koch said the Frogs played with a high energy level throughout the game because they wanted to get a win over the rival Longhorns.

“Our coach didn’t have to say much,” Koch said. “You could tell by the atmosphere in the locker room that it was going to be a good game.”

The Frogs took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute on a header by Koch off a corner kick by freshman forward Emma Heckendorn.

It was a big moment for Heckendorn, who hadn’t taken a corner in a game all season. Koch is normally the one to take those.

“I’m just trying not to let this go out of bounds,” Heckendorn said of the play. “So I hit it, and then I saw [Koch] running. And I saw them meet, and I was like, ‘Thank God.’”

TCU took the 1-0 lead to halftime, but wasn’t content with being up just one goal.

“We were all really pumped at halftime,” Heckendorn said. “In the locker room we were like, ‘Okay, we’ve got to score. Keep shooting. Score again. Score again.’”

After the break, the Frogs took possession and quickly sliced through the Longhorn defense. Sophomore forward Michelle Prokof tapped it ahead to Heckendorn who put it in for a 2-0 lead.

The goal came just 14 seconds into the half. It happened so quickly, even the Frogs couldn’t believe it.

“I got to the ball, and I don’t even know,” Heckendorn said, laughing. “It all happened so fast. It was just bang bang.”

Koch said it was that goal that helped the Frogs really take control of the match.

“Obviously when you score and get that much momentum at the beginning of the [half], it really helps set the tone for the second half,” Koch said.

Freshman midfielder Eryn Spencer added a goal of her own to make it 3-0 to put the game out of reach. Longhorns forward Chantale Campbell scored in the 58th minute to make it 3-1, but it was too late for Texas.

The win came in front of a homecoming weekend crowd of 2,553 fans, the third largest home attendance in TCU history. The Frogs’ next game is at home Sunday at 1 p.m. against Texas Tech.
