The Frogs jumped out to an early 14-0 lead and never looked back against Oklahoma State, beating the Cowboys 42-9 and increasing their record to 5-1 (2-1 Big 12). After a difficult 61-58 loss to No. 4 Baylor last Saturday, the Frogs responded with a statement win over No. 15 Oklahoma State.
“We went from the highest high of beating Oklahoma to the lowest low of losing like we did last week,” coach Gary Patterson said. “Then we bounced back to beat Oklahoma State this week, a top 15 team in the nation.”
TCU compiled 676 yards and held OSU to just 258 total yards in the victory, with the defense allowing three field goals and no touchdowns.
“I’m proud of them, to come back from last week and not give up a touchdown, it was a good effort,” Patterson said.
Wide receiver Josh Doctson exploded for 225 yards receiving, second best all-time in TCU single-game history. The TCU record is Jimmy Young’s 226 yards against Doctson’s former school, Wyoming.
“You never really know what your stats are until someone yells them from the stands or something like that,” Doctson said. “But getting the [win] is much more important than one more yard.”
Quarterback Trevone Boykin set a career-high with 410 yards passing, his first-career 400-yard game.
Patterson added after the game that he’s always supported Boykin’s ability. “Through the years I’ve always been a Trevone fan, I’ve been defending him in practice for three years,” Patterson said. “He’s always looked like a quarterback to me.”
Senior linebacker Paul Dawson continued his impressive form, tallying 13 tackles in the first half. Through seven weeks, Dawson is considered one of the favorites for the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year award.
Running back B.J. Catalon also had a career day, gaining 102 yards on the ground and scoring two touchdowns, his seventh and eighth on the year. He has a rushing touchdown in every game this season. Boykin threw a 22-yard touchdown to receiver Deante’ Gray to open the scoring in the second half.
Running back Aaron Green added a 4-yard touchdown rush on TCU’s next drive, increasing the score to 42-9. OSU quarterback Daxx Garman was intercepted by Kevin White and Derrick Kindred, and sacked by Davion Pierson and Chucky Hunter.
The Horned Frogs now move on to next Saturday’s 2:30 p.m. matchup against Texas Tech, and Patterson said he’s expecting a rowdy atmosphere at Amon G. Carter Stadium. “I’m willing to predict there will be a lot of energy for the Texas Tech game, and we need a win to keep climbing in this conference,” Patterson said.
