It’s a new season, a new team, and a new home for the TCU Horned Frog men’s basketball team.

So far, they’re taking full advantage of the new opportunities.

The Frogs used a 22-4 run in the second half to beat the Prairie View A&M Panthers 71-54 Friday in their first official game at the Wilkerson-Greines Athletic Center.

Senior guard Trey Ziegler, in his first game for the Frogs after transferring from Pittsburgh, led the way with 14 points.

Sophomore center Karviar Shepherd posted his fifth career double-double, with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and senior guard Kyan Anderson added 12 points and 4 assists for his 15th-straight double-digit output.

Kenrich Williams, a sophomore transfer from New Mexico Junior College, was a pleasant surprise for the Frogs.

He had 11 points and went to the free-throw line nine times, in addition to tallying eight boards, three assists, three blocks, and three steals.

Every TCU player that dressed saw action tonight. Freshmen Chauncey Collins and Link Kabadyundi hit the court for the first time in their young careers.

Collins earned all of his three points at the line, while Kabadyundi went scoreless yet made his mark on the defensive end with a pair of emphatic blocks.

Prairie View A&M was led by forward Karim York and guard Tre Hagood, who each put up 13 points. Point guard Montrael Scott had a rough night from the field, going 5-17, although he did manage 11 points.

TCU never trailed in the game. Shepherd scored the first two points of the young season with a put-back layup in the first minute. From then on, the Panthers were reduced to playing catch-up.

Prairie View A&M’s tough full-court press limited the Frogs offensively and forced eight turnovers in the first half.

However, the Panthers couldn’t get anything to fall on the other end, and the slow-moving first half ended 30-23.

The Panthers tightened the game up early in the second half with a 6-0 run and were able to cut the margin to four with 14:49 remaining in the game.

From that moment on, TCU would take control.

Kenrich Williams’ three-point play kicked off a 22-4 run that spanned almost ten minutes. Prairie View would not score again from the field until Tre Hagood hit a three with 5:12 remaining in the game.

The teams then traded buckets and kept the margin hovering around the final 17-point mark.

The win marked the 13th win out of the last 15 season openers for the Frogs.

The next game is against Washington State on Monday, November 17 at Wilkerson-Greines. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
