Three schools later, TCU men’s basketball senior guard Trey Zeigler hopes this will be his best year yet.

The Detroit native started at Central Michigan University where he played for two seasons. Zeigler then transferred to the University of Pittsburgh for one season and will now finish his college basketball career playing for TCU.

In Zeigler’s first game with the Horned Frogs, he led the team to a 71-54 win against Prairie View A&M in the season opener, scoring 14 points.

“I was a little nervous since it was my first game but I was mostly just happy to be back on the court,” Zeigler said.

Zeigler came to TCU in fall 2013, but had to sit out a season due to NCAA transfer rules. He says since coming to TCU he has seen a transformation within himself.

“My family moved from Michigan to Pittsburgh with me so this is really my first time being on my own so I’ve grown up a lot here,” Zeigler said.

The 6-foot-5, 203-pound player says he thinks he brings versatility to the team.

“I can play three different positions…I can score, make plays for the other guys and defend on the other end,” Zeigler said.

Out of high school, the four-star recruit committed to play at CMU where his father was the head coach at the time. Zeigler averaged 16.3 points per game his freshman year and 15.7 a game his sophomore year.

He played two seasons there and then transferred after his father was fired as head coach.

As a result, Zeigler spent his junior year playing at Pittsburgh, where he only averaged 4.4 points per game. After one season at Pittsburgh, he decided to transfer yet again.

“I just didn’t fit in with how they played,” Zeigler said. “I loved the city and the school but I just wanted a different place for basketball.”

Zeigler says once he chose to leave Pittsburgh, TCU head coach Trent Johnson was one of the first people to call him. Johnson, who used to be LSU’s men’s basketball head coach, recruited Zeigler out of high school.

“Having that relationship with coach J and falling in love with TCU during my visit made my decision easy,” Zeigler said. “TCU just seemed like a good fit for me.”

Johnson said Zeigler is an asset to the team and has high expectations for him.

“He’s played a lot of basketball, he’s a coach’s son and one of our senior leaders,” Johnson said. “We need him to play at a high level.”

Zeigler said he knows being a senior on the team means he has to show the younger guys how things should be done.

Sophomore center Karviar Shepherd said Zeigler stands out on and off the court.

“Trey is a great player and has a great personality…I love the way he gets the team going,” Shepherd said.

Zeigler said he believes the Frogs have the opportunity to shock a lot of people and prove them wrong this season.

“I think everyone will see much improvement and hopefully postseason play this year,” Zeigler said.
