On every Wednesday night in December, January and February, University Christian Church will provide homeless people dinner, breakfast and a place to spend the night.
The Room In The Inn program provides homeless people from the Fort Worth Day Resource Center with a meal and a safe place to spend the night during the winter months.
Currently, UCC hosts 10 homeless people a night who are picked up from the Day Resource Center, a place where the homeless can spend their day doing activities rather than walking the streets. The Center does not provide overnight lodging.
UCC’s Room In The Inn coordinator Carol Stewart said the guests often play board games after dinner. Some volunteers play instruments during dinner and some even bring their dogs for guests to play with.
Stewart said the ideal number of volunteers per night is 36. The duties of volunteers include preparing dinner and breakfast, cleaning, socializing with guests and driving the guests from back to the Day Resource Center. She said if there are fewer than 36 members signed up to volunteer, then the ones who sign up are often left doing multiple jobs that they did not sign up for.
Some of the volunteer duties, like driving the guests, require training. The church hosted training sessions in November and June but she said anyone interested in getting trained can contact her and do brief one-on-one training session.
