For the second year in a row, TCU women’s basketball beat Texas at home on Sunday.
The win over the No. 14 Longhorns pushed the Frogs to a 13-7 record overall and a 5-4 record in the Big 12.
Veja Hamilton, TCU’s leading scorer, registered 16 points and Chelsea Prince added 12 points, nine rebounds and seven steals to the Horned Frogs’ victory. In the end, Texas turned the ball over 25 times.
“[Klara Bradshaw] played a nice presence in the paint for us defensively,” Pebley said. “We change defenses a lot to not let [the opposing team] be comfortable.”
Sunday’s win put the Frogs in fourth place in the Big 12 standings. This week will be vital for TCU’s Big 12 standing against two conference teams: West Virginia on Feb. 4 and Texas Tech on Feb. 8.
West Virginia and Texas Tech are both at the bottom of the Big 12 standings with identical 3-6 conference records. Both teams lost to Texas.
West Virginia recently upset No. 24 Oklahoma by a 78-69 margin. Sophomore Bre McDonald scored a career-high with 19 points. McDonald also recorded five steals and went 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Forward Averee Fields was also a top performer for the Mountaineers with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists.
Amber Battle is a top player to watch for on Texas Tech’s team. In the Red Raiders’ most recent games against Kansas State and West Virginia, Battle was the leading scorer with 19 points against the Wildcats and 33 points against the Mountaineers.
A TCU victory over West Virginia and Texas Tech would look promising if it weren’t for the ugly season opener against Texas Tech. The Frogs were outscored in a 52-37 game in Lubbock, Texas.
TCU will try to avenge its early loss to Texas Tech on Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. in the University Recreation Center.
