TCU police are crediting video surveillance cameras with helping them apprehend two men suspected in the December burglary of an unlocked GrandMarc apartment.

On Friday, Matthew Abichu and Collin Ransom, both of Frisco, Texas, were charged with burglary of a habitation, TCU Police Sgt. Kelly Ham said.

The suspects were not TCU students but were visiting a friend in GrandMarc on the evening of Dec. 6, Ham said.

“At about 2 a.m. [on Dec. 7] the men left the apartment of the friend and went checking the doors all over the building,” Ham said. “They found one [that was unlocked] and went in and burglarized it.”

The two stole “laptops, and a backpack, and a calculator,” Ham said.

A student told police that when she returned to her room around 3:30 a.m, her laptop was missing and her backpack open, according to a police report. The student’s roommate said that the suspects attempted to enter her room before realizing she was there sleeping.

Ham said he went to the suspects’ Frisco home on Jan. 23 and arrested Matthew Abichu. Ham said Abichu resisted arrest.

“Frisco police charged [Abichu] with failure to identify as a fugitive, because he gave us a fake name, and they also had six local warrants on him,” Ham said.

Ransom turned himself in after Ham contacted him, he said.

Without the video surveillance cameras, the suspects probably would not have been caught, Ham said.

“Video helps solve cases,” he said.
