After losing 77-57 to No. 19 Baylor Wednesday, the TCU men’s basketball team looked to rebound at home against No. 21 Oklahoma.

However, the Sooners’ defense stifled the Horned Frogs en route to a 68-56 win Saturday afternoon at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.

Oklahoma (16-7 overall, 7-4 Big 12) increased its win streak to four games and jumped into third place in the conference after Baylor defeated No. 15 West Virginia 87-69.

TCU (14-9, 1-9 Big 12) has lost six consecutive games and remains in last place.

Juniors Ryan Spangler and Buddy Hield led the way for the Sooners. Spangler led all scorers with 21 points and Hield notched his third career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore forward Kenrich Williams scored 10 points to lead the Frogs. Senior forward Amric Fields and sophomore forward Brandon Parrish combined to add 15 points off the bench.

The Sooners began the game on a 9-0 run after the Frogs missed their first 10 shots from the field, but TCU fought back and narrowed the deficit to one with 7:51 remaining the first half.

The Frogs then took the lead after a layup by senior forward Trey Zeigler. With four minutes remaining in the half, TCU led Oklahoma 28-21.

But the Sooners closed out the half on a 10-0 run and entered the locker room leading 31-28.

Despite trailing by three points at halftime, the Frogs forced 10 Sooner turnovers and tallied five steals. They also outrebounded Oklahoma 13-4 on the offensive end.

TCU made only 11 first-half field goals though, and the Frogs were just 27.5 percent from the field after 20 minutes of play.

Their shooting woes would continue in the second half. The Sooners held the Frogs to 31.6 percent from the field and they did not give up a single 3-point shot. Overall, TCU was 23-for-73 (28.8 percent) in the game.

Head coach Trent Johnson said the Sooners caused fits for TCU’s offense by taking senior point guard Kyan Anderson out of the game. Anderson finished with eight points on 2-of-8 shooting.

“[Oklahoma] did a really good job of shading a man on Kyan and making it tough for him” Johnson said.

Johnson also acknowledged Oklahoma’s energy on the defensive end as a big reason for their success against the Frogs.

“They’re active with their hands,” Johnson said. “They challenged shots.”

Oklahoma jumped out to a 10-point lead after a 9-2 run to begin the half, and the Sooners did not give it up after that.

“What we have to get through our heads and have to fight through is that… When we’re down six or seven, regardless of what the situation is, we have a tendency to just give in,” Johnson said. “What’s down the line is down the line. We’re not dealing with it very well.’

TCU will aim to earn its second conference win of the season when the Frogs travel to Austin and face No. 25 Texas on Wednesday, Feb. 11.

Oklahoma will return home and attempt to extend its winning streak Monday against No. 11 Iowa State.
