Five draft-eligible Horned Frogs took part in this year’s NFL Scouting Combine, but none of them boosted their draft stock. Some may have even lowered it.

Paul Dawson

What’s being considered as one of the most disappointing combine performances this year is one of TCU’s highest-rated draft prospects, Paul Dawson.

The senior linebacker ran an alarmingly low 4.93 second 40-yard dash, which is generally considered the most important event at the combine. His 28-inch vertical jump, as well as his 109-inch broad jump are also unimpressive. Thus, several NFL scouting analysts are bringing Dawson’s athleticism into question.

Dawson didn’t help his case for a high round selection when he admitted to regularly showing up late to team workouts.

Despite Dawson’s terrible showing at the combine, he will most likely still be one of the first linebackers chosen in the draft, according to NFL scouts. Some say his film is the best of any linebacker prospect in this year’s draft.

Kevin White

Cornerback prospect Kevin White was one Horned Frog who needed to have a good showing at the combine to even guarantee himself a draft pick.

White’s 4.63 second 40-yard dash time is considered slow for his position in the NFL. His 121-inch broad jump and 35.5-inch vertical are considered average results for cornerback prospects.

Tayo Fabuluje

Offensive lineman Tayo Fabuluje only participated in three combine events, and he tested in the middle of the pack in all of them. The 6-foot-6, 353-pound lineman has a huge frame and decent footwork, according to NFL scouts. But the knock on Fabuluje is his experience, since he’s only played two full seasons due to transfer rules.

• Vertical: 29.5 INCH
• 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.77 SEC

B.J. Catalon

Of the five TCU prospects at the combine, running back B.J. Catalon had the best showing, but he probably didn’t improve his draft stock as much as he had hoped. His 40-yard dash time is a little slower than average, but in order for Catalon to be noticed, he really needed to post a better time since he is undersized and his style of play doesn’t translate well to the NFL. However, Catalon did have one of the fastest three cone drill times for his position, so it’s possible that he made a good impression on the scouts.

Chris Hackett

Safety Chris Hackett, like Dawson, had one the best seasons for any player at his position, but his combine performance is raising some questions about his athleticism. 

Hackett ran a 4.81 in the 40-yard dash which is considerably slower than the combine average, which is near a 4.6. The rest of Hackett’s measurements are pretty average compared to his competition at the combine, but some coaches will value the film more than his workout results.
