The Kimbell Art Museum will open a new temporary exhibit showcasing the personal collections of Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass starting March 1.
The collection will feature 37 paintings and sculptures that represent a wide range of time periods, from Impressionism to post-World War II art.
While Bass died in 2006 and Lee in 2013, their family is very excited that their legacy will continue to live on.
“My brothers and I are honored to have our parents’ collection at the Kimbell and are so pleased to have the opportunity to share their art with others,” said Sid R. Bass, the eldest son of Bass and Lee.
The Bass family has deep roots in Fort Worth. Bass and Lee raised their family and built their fortune in the city. The Bass’ came from an impressive business pedigree, as Perry was the nephew of oil tycoon Sid W. Richardson.
The family eventually became known for their philanthropic efforts that helped enrich the Fort Worth community. They are credited with the revitalization of downtown Fort Worth, transforming it from a lethargic downtown area to a robust cultural center.
Bass and Lee also spent much of their time and money traveling the world and collecting valuable art for their personal collection. The collection boasts some of art’s most famous names such as Van Gogh, Picasso, Renoir, Matisse and Rodin.
“The collection grew with no design other than a love of the art that gave them pleasure, usually with strong and happy colors, and became an integral part of their lives,” Sid R. Bass said. “A collection born with enthusiasm became a lifetime of pleasure and joy.”
The Kimbell has a unique opportunity in showcasing the Bass family collection as the exhibit has not been displayed in any other museums.
“The exhibition is an honor and remarkable occasion for the Kimbell, which is deeply grateful to the Bass family for so generously sharing the collection with others,” said Eric M. Lee, director of the Kimbell.
“This show will no doubt give great pleasure to our audiences.”
The private collection of Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass will be on display at the Kimbell until May 24. Admission to this exhibit will be free.
