The Fort Worth YardSmart seminar will aim to teach residents about ways to conserve water with landscaping.
The YardSmart seminar offers lectures on native plants, landscape design and vegetable gardening as well as a panel discussion and tour of the Botanic Garden’s water conservation garden.
YardSmart seminars are held every fall and spring by the Fort Worth Water Department, said Dotty Woodson, a speaker at the seminar.
This Saturday’s seminar is free. Fort Worth residents can attend certain portions of the seminar or the entire event.
Woodson said around 150 to 200 people usually attend the YardSmart seminars.
Yardsmart lecture topics are chosen based on audience suggestions from the previous year’s seminars, said seminar coordinator Hilda Zuniga of the Fort Worth Water Department.
The first event, “Get to Know Our Native Plants,” begins at 8:30 a.m. Speaker Gailon Hardin said the lecture will discuss reasons to use native plants.
Hardin said a sustainable landscape means “using current resources without compromising resources of the future. Each one of us can certainly do that in our landscapes.”
At 9:30 a.m., Steve Cheney will present “Best Landscape Design Practices.” Cheney said he will cover common questions that residents have about landscaping and plant selection.
The last lecture of the seminar, “Do-It-Yourself Vegetable Gardening,” begins at 11 a.m. Speaker Dotty Woodson said she will cover the types of vegetables to plant in spring in summer.
“Planting time for spring gardens is right now,” said Woodson, “Come learn how fun and easy growing vegetables is.”
