The TCU Horned Frogs women’s basketball team saw its season come to an end Sunday following a 77-73 overtime loss to Southern Miss in the second round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

After knocking off Stephen F. Austin at home on Thursday, the Frogs travelled to Hattiesburg, Mississippi with hopes of extending head coach Raegan Pebley’s first season, but a late run of three-pointers by Southern Miss sealed their fate.

Propelled by 26 points from guard Zahna Medley, the Frogs controlled the game for most of the first forty minutes, extending their lead to as many as 14 at the 5:47 mark in the second half.

TCU led by seven with nearly a minute left in regulation, but a furious comeback by USM and some missed free throws by the Frogs resulted in a 61-61 tie at the buzzer.

Despite Medley’s sixth three-pointer of the game early in the overtime period, Southern Miss used the momentum created by their comeback and jumped out to a 73-67 lead.

USM was able to control most of the overtime period from that point on, and a last minute effort by the Frogs fell short.

TCU finished their season with an 18-14 record that belied their overall success. The Frogs finished tied for third in the Big 12, one of the most competitive leagues in the nation.

The Frogs had hoped to receive a bid to the NCAA tournament, but a first-round exit in the Big 12 championship at the hands of Texas left the team on the outside looking in.

For seniors Natalie Ventress, Donielle Breaux and Chelsea Prince, the loss was their last game in the purple and white.

Prince had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Breaux also had 13 points, and Ventress added 6 points and 9 assists.

This was the second straight postseason appearance for the Frogs. Coach Pebley will look to continue the streak next season in star player Medley’s final year.
