From 2010 to 2013, six students at TCU committed suicide.
Last academic year, 183 students came to the counseling center with thoughts of suicide, according to the TCU Counseling and Mental Health Center.
This past fall semester, 161 students sought help.
According to the Suicide Prevention Resource Center and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, on average, 9.5 percent of students in college have thoughts of suicide.
Based on that number, TCU should have about 950 students seeking help.
The counseling center is using new programming and events on campus as a way to create conversation about mental health.
TCU’s suicide prevention outreach coordinator, Cortney Gumbleton, said she is encouraging students to participate in a 60-minute suicide prevention workshop called Question, Persuade and Refer.
Students can learn how to recognize signs of depression and how to help friends in need.
Gumbleton said more than 1,300 students have been trained through this program at TCU this academic year and she is looking forward to seeing that number grow.
