Last Saturday, a select group of TCU students took their positions in front of an audience of family and friends in the Brown-Lupton University Union ballroom for the final time this semester.
The Word of Truth gospel choir did not produce a spring concert last year, but they were able to bring it back for 2015.
The choir usually has two major on-campus performances a year – one in the fall and another in the spring. Other performances they have done on campus include the Night at the Apollo program, Kappa Krush the Mic and a Black History Month program.
There are also outside engagements that they participate in during the course of the school year.
“We have gone to other churches and we have been invited to a wedding to sing, so we don’t just stay on campus, we travel to other places as well,” Choir Director Mequilla Powell said.
Songs performed at the concert included “Awesome God,” “You Are” and “The Blood Still Works.” There were also solo performances by David Jones and Alicia Mayfield.
Some alumni members of the choir returned and performed their own medley of gospel songs at the event. Audience members clapped and sang along through the selections.
Mayfield, a junior psychology major, said the choir has been one big family to her.
“I’ve been in [the choir] since I was a freshman, and I have found community and a group of people that love me and support me,” Mayfield said.
“For a lot of us, this is our home away from home and our family. It’s not just singing, it’s deeper than that for us,” Powell said.
There are currently more than 20 members of the choir, and students who would like to sing, meet new people, worship or grow closer to Christ are always welcome to join. Anyone interested can attend a practice Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on the third floor of the BLUU.
