TCU’s experienced offense is standing out on the scoreboard, but the team’s young defense is holding its own in the first half of the Horned Frogs’ home opener against the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks.

The TCU defense entered this week with several question marks, but with one half down, it has kept Stephen F. Austin (SFA) from getting on the board and held the team to a mere 39 yards.

After 16 minutes of play, both teams’ quarterbacks were 8-for-13. That makes the game sound even. Look at the yards, and it’s a different story. Trevone Boykin had 180, and Zach Conque had 3.

Boykin totaled 243 yards in the first half, passing the 9,000 career yard mark. That number makes him the nation’s active leader.The Frogs got off to a slow start, going three and out on their first drive.

Things turned around on their second possession with 24- and 41-yard receptions by Josh Doctson and Kolby Listenbee, respectively.

The defense had another setback when safety Kenny Iloka was injured in the first quarter. He was helped off the field and has not returned.

In 30 minutes of play, the Frog offense averaged 8.6 yards per play, compared to 1.1 for SFA.
