Rec Center reopens after closing Monday for a power outage

The TCU Campus Recreation Center

Update 8:30 a.m. 9/29/15: The Rec Center has reopened as of 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

Some TCU students had to move to new classrooms following a power outage in the Campus Recreation Center and Rickel Academic Wing.

On Sunday morning a planned power outage led to an unsuccessful restoration after a transformer went down. Rickel and the Rec were without power until 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Kathy Cavins-Tull wrote in an email Sunday evening that attempts to restore power were unsuccessful. A special team was then assigned to restoring the power.

“We have had an electrical team working all day to restore service without success,” Cavins-Tull wrote. “A group of specialists will be on campus in the morning to address the issue, and we are hoping to be back to normal by afternoon.”

Electrical team trucks are parked outside of the Rec and Rickel.

A temporary generator is being put in place in the meantime.

“We are currently hooking up a generator to get us through until we can determine what to do about the transformer,” Cavins-Tull wrote.

Patrick Miller, registrar and director of enrollment management, wrote in an email Monday morning that because of the extended delays, afternoon and evening classes would have to be moved in addition to the already-moved morning classes.

“Unfortunately, resolving the power in Rickel is proving to be difficult,” Miller wrote. “Today’s afternoon and evening classes must be moved to different rooms.”

It’s not just classes that are being affected, though. Meetings and work had to be canceled as well.

Allison Armfield, a junior modern dance major, missed her yearbook meeting.

“Because of the power outages today,” Armfield said, “yearbook couldn’t have its staff meeting, which means I don’t have work hours.”
