Several hundred students gathered in the campus commons Thursday evening to watch the Horned Frog football team win 23-17 against Minnesota in the first game of the season.

The Student Government Association partnered with Student Activities to put on an event that was thought up by a freshmen resident of Milton Daniel. The two student organizations grilled several hundred hot dogs, served specialty popcorn and a variety of snacks.

Ryker Thompson, SGA Vice President of Operations, said that he was very pleased with how the event came together.

“It was more than we expected,” Thompson said. “To be able to put on an event that’s not a headlining event such as the fall concert, this was a spectacular turn out.”

Before half time, students received a little surprise as the sprinklers began going off.

Thompson said the students were very cooperative and that there was a miscommunication with physical plant.

Junior Lance Montgomery said that the sprinklers didn’t deter students from enjoying the party.

“I think it’s that Horned Frog companionship,” Montgomery said. “A little water is nothing. This is the first game of the season.”

At halftime, Senseless Acts of Comedy, the student improvisational comedy group, performed in the Brown-Lupton University Auditorium for a full house.

Emily Versen, a SAC cast member, said she thought the halftime show was successful.

“We usually have our shows on Thursdays and we didn’t want to compete with the football game,” Versen said. “We all wanted to watch it, so we thought a short little halftime show would be great entertainment. It ended up working out really well.”

Freshman Jack Steele said he enjoyed the experience and would come to another watch party in the commons again.

“I think there’s a lot of energy with everyone,” Steele said. “Everyone seems to be really into the game, so it makes it a lot more fun.”

Jon Barnes, a senior theatre major, said the community and school spirit brought him to the event.

“My favorite part about being a TCU Horned Frog is stuff like this: us getting together as a community to support each other and all our endeavors,” Barnes said.

Thompson said that SGA will have a discussion about having more watch parties in the future.
