While students across campus are getting excited about the Horned Frog football team’s Thursday night game against West Virginia, having the game on a weeknight presents a problem with class schedules.

Because of this rare conflict, some professors have changed their class schedules to adapt to the Thursday night football game.

Many classes are in session at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings, which is also the same time as kickoff. Professors who teach classes that coincide with the football game have developed their own personal strategies on how to avoid an attendance competition with the Frogs.

Dr. Travis Tokar, an associate professor in the Neeley School of Business, decided to cancel his Supply Chain Management course on Thursday.

“I’ve decided to cancel class on Thursday, Oct 29,” Tokar said in an email to his students. “It sounds like things are going to be crazy. I think it would be prohibitively difficult to hold class.”

Film, Television and Digital Media professor Richard Allen originally wanted to hold his Thursday evening class from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., but then chose to cancel class. “I actually decided to cancel that evening class, because, as it turned out, I was able to do that without negatively impacting the academic flow of the class,” Allen said.

While some professors canceled class all together, some decided to merge classes, and some will hold their class at a different time during the day so students could attend both class and the football game.

Professor Vanessa Shropshire, who teaches an upper level Principles of Marketing course on Thursday evenings, said she decided it would be best to merge two of her classes.

Students can enter the student section of Amon G. Carter Stadium for the game at 5:00 p.m.
