TCU men’s basketball was handed their first loss of the season Saturday at home by South Dakota State University, 76-67.
The Horned Frogs nearly mounted a comeback, battling back from 51-33 in the second half, but the Jackrabbits were able to hold them off at the end.
Malique Trent was the top scorer for the Frogs with 18, along with 3 steals and 2 assists. Brandon Parrish added 17 points and seven rebounds at an efficient 4 of 8 from the field.
“We didn’t really play well the first 25 or 27 minutes of the game,” Parris said. “In the last 13 minutes we showed we’re a good team. We can fight back.”
Points off of turnovers caused a slow start for the Frogs as SDSU capitalized for 15 points off turnovers in the first half. The Jackrabbits’ depth also began to show as the game went on, their bench outscoring the Frogs’ 21-10. Senior Devonta Abron was another bright spot for TCU, scoring 8 points and pulling down a team-high 12 rebounds.
“Devonta competed on the glass”, Coach Trent Johnson said, “He’s as good as he’s been from a mobility standpoint since the first year I was here.”
The Horned Frogs will take their 2-1 record to Mexico for the Cancun Classic, where they face off against Rhode Island on November 24.
