Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will headline the spring concert Jan. 14 at 9 p.m. in the new Schollmaier Arena.
The duo is known for songs such as “Thrift Shop,” “Same Love” and “Downtown.” The Student Government Association (SGA) is sponsoring the event, and its cabinet members were the ones who made the decision on Macklemore and Lewis.
Cabinet member Katie Phillips, vice president of external affairs, said that Macklemore and Lewis reached out to TCU about adding the school to their tour as a result of TCU’s positive reputation in the entertainment industry.
“We weighed our options and chose the duo based on who we felt would most excite students,” Phillips said. “So far, the student response has been very positive.”
Phillips said Macklemore and Lewis were also chosen based on their availability, price and fit for TCU.
“The agents and managers of the duo have been very easy to work with,” Phillips said. “They are excited to perform on our campus.”
The announcement of the artists went out to students via a mass email from SGA this morning. In the email it stated that the show is a “private concert open only to TCU students, faculty, and staff with a valid TCU ID.” This is a change from the policy for fall concerts which let students bring one guest.
This is the first year that SGA has been able to sponsor a spring concert. Phillips said that this was made possible by a donation from an alum that helped pay for the 2012 and 2013 fall concerts, allowing SGA to save that money to use for spring 2016 concert.
“Given our ability to fund a spring concert this year, we decided this would be an incredible way to give back to the students,” Phillips said.
Previous headliners at fall concerts have included Hunter Hayes this year, Jason Derulo in 2014, Little Big Town in 2013 and Blake Shelton in 2012.
