The TCU women’s basketball team extended its home winning streak to 12 games on Wednesday, as the Horned Frogs coasted to a 88-55 victory over Stephen F. Austin to improve their record to 7-2 on the season.
The team has built an impressive home winning streak dating to last season. The streak is the third longest in program history.
As a team, the Frogs set a school record for shooting percentage in a single game, as they shot 61.5 percent from the field. The Frogs made 32 of their 52 shots in the game, also shooting 9-of-18 from the three-point line.
The Frogs’ stellar performance from the field led to five players scoring double digit points, including freshman center Jordan Moore (11 points), senior guard Zahna Medley (11 points), sophomore guard AJ Alix (13 points), sophomore guard Toree Thompson (14 points) and senior forward Caitlin Diaz (11 points, career high).
TCU put the game away early in the first quarter by starting the game on 22-4 run, which included a 19-0 by the Horned Frogs, as SFA went 0-11 from the field over the seven and a half minutes when the run occurred. A big reason for that dominant stretch was first-year center Jordan Moore, who scored eight of her eleven points in the game’s first two and a half minutes.
“She [Moore] plays really really well and we always try and get her the ball, and today she was just making buckets,” senior forward Caitlin Diaz said. “When someone starts making buckets, we keep trying to get the ball to her.”
Diaz and Moore and the rest of TCU’s frontcourt led the Horned Frogs to outscore the Lumberjacks 44-32 in the paint.
Head coach Raegan Pebley attributes her team’s prolific shooting to valuing possessions.
“We’re focused on working for a great shot, so that we score, not just so that we take shots,” Pebley said. “Our poise, our willingness to value possessions, and to recognize floor spacing was important against the defense they playing, which really allowed us to be efficient.”
Pebley also said ball reversals and patience also factored in to TCU’s efficient scoring outburst against SFA.
The Horned Frogs are 213-53 at home since the 1999-2000 season and 20-3 over the last two seasons.
TCU’s next game is back at the TCU University Recreation Center Saturday at 11 a.m. against No. 3 Notre Dame. It’s also their last game at the University Recreation Center, as they’re set to move into the new Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena on Sunday Dec. 20 when the Horned Frogs face Southern Utah at 3:30 p.m.
