Students, parents, faculty, and community can now vote between two district calendars in Fort Worth schools for the first time. The calendars outline breaks, teacher training days, and school holidays for the next two years.
The main difference between the calendars is the timing of winter break. Most of the other dates listed in the calendars, according to the Fort Worth ISD Calendar Survey, are the same or differ by one day.
Option A schedules winter break from Dec. 19 to Jan. 3 this fall and Dec. 18 to Jan. 2 the following year. Option B, however, plans winter break from Dec. 23 to Jan. 9 this fall and Dec. 22 to Jan. 9 next year.
Clint Bond, a district spokesperson, said the district wants to give families two options for planning their travels. He said it comes down to whether students want the week before Christmas off or the week after New Year’s off.
“We’re asking opinions, that’s all,” Bond said.
He said the school board has the final say on what the calendar will be and that he thinks the vote will factor into their decision. He also said calendar surveys “could be an option in the future.”
More than 5,800 people have voted on the calendars as of Jan. 27. The ballot closes Feb. 3 at midnight.
