TCU’s standing in the polls depends on who’s doing the ranking.
In the Coaches Poll, the Frogs moved to No. 12 from No.14 after escaping South Dakota State 59-41. The AP Poll wasn’t impressed with the Frogs’ performance, dropping them from No.13 to No. 15.
These early polls offer weekly bragging rights, but not much else. The College Football Playoff Committee rankings, which start halfway through the season, sets the card for the final four spots in the playoffs. TCU head coach Gary Patterson said at his press conference on Tuesday that he doesn’t even follow the rankings this early.
“The only that counts to me is the final one,” he said.
The season opened with seven ranked teams losing – the most upsets to ever start a season. The polls reflected the rocky start.
TCU wide receiver Desmon White summed up the casual fan’s attitude about all of the early-season polls and rankings, “It’s really early, we don’t even know about the rankings,” White said. “They don’t mean anything right now.”
Oklahoma (No. 3 Coaches and AP), LSU (No. 6 Coaches and No. 5 AP), Notre Dame (No. 9 Coaches and No. 10 AP), Ole Miss (No. 12 and No. 11 AP), UCLA (No. 16 AP), USC (No. 20 AP), and North Carolina (No. 22 AP) all fell.
Teams who knocked off their highly ranked opponents made the biggest jumps made in this week’s polls.
Wisconsin jumped into the poll as No. 16 in Coaches and No. 10 in the AP after defeating LSU.
Georgia climbed to No. 9 from No. 16 in Coaches Poll and to No. 9 from No. 18 in the AP Poll after beating the North Carolina.
A couple of Texas schools also took some big steps after season-defining wins. A University of Texas win over Notre Dame put the Longhorns into the Coaches Poll’s No. 20 spot and to No. 11 in the AP Poll.
The University of Houston saw it’s standings rise to No. 7 from No. 13 in the Coaches Poll after beating Oklahoma. The AP Poll was even more impressed, moving Houston to No. 6 from No. 15.
TCU has an opportunity to impress voters this weekend when they take on Arkansas at Amon G. Carter Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
