Last Tuesday, Student Government Association held a voter drive on campus to help TCU students get registered to vote in the upcoming presidential election on Nov. 8.

The SGA golf cart was stationed near the library from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and the representatives who worked the event helped in-state voters, as well as out-of-state students who need absentee ballots, get registered.

SGA Government Affairs Coordinator Allegra Hernandez, who facilitated the event, said SGA’s main goal is to get students excited about the election.

“This is a big election, so we just want to empower as many people as possible,” Hernandez said. “We want people to have the opportunity (to vote), so we’re coming to them instead of them having to go somewhere else to do it.”

SGA also held a debate watch party in Brown-Lupton University Union on Monday night, which garnered a student crowd of nearly 300. Hernandez said she is very happy with the political participation on campus so far.

“It’s really awesome that this many people care when sometimes it seems like people don’t care right now,” Hernandez said. “I’m just impressed that people are thinking about it.”

TCU’s Women in Politics group, Ignite, also held a voter drive outside the BLUU on Tuesday. Member Rachel Herrera emphasized the importance of exercising our right to vote.

“This election season is really important in a lot of ways,” Herrera said. “College students in general don’t have the highest turnout rates…I think TCU students tend to be pretty engaged but obviously we’re still hoping to get that up.”

SGA will host one more debate watch party in the BLUU as well as an election party on election night.
