More than 30 agencies gathered on the Jarvis Hall lawn Tuesday afternoon to engage with students about volunteer opportunities.

The volunteer fair is held every fall for students and faculty to meet with representatives from various community agencies to learn about the service opportunities in Fort Worth, according to director of community engagement Rosangela Boyd

“It is our hope that our students will find ways of participating and be engaged in service throughout Fort Worth and show that we are living up to our mission,” Boyd said.  

Lillie Dewar, a first-year mechanical engineering major, said having the event on campus was convenient for students.

“It’s nice to have them come out and help us find those areas rather than having to go out ourselves and find those outlets,” Dewar said. 

Opportunities at the event included joining an American Heart Association advocacy team, preserving Texas State Parks and caring for animals at the Humane Society of North Texas.

American Heart Association spokesperson Victoria Nelson said students should be active and donate as much time as possible.

Each agency set up tables with pamphlets, brochures and free merchandise for students and faculty to learn more about their respective organizations.

Clare McGrady, a first-year mathematics major, said the event was helpful for students that are from out-of-state. 

“I’m really looking for something specific to Texas so that I can get to know the area better,” McGrady said. “I really want to get connected in the Texas community and Fort Worth.”
