Families living in the 76109, 76104 and 76110 ZIP codes who can’t afford a traditional Thanksgiving dinner will be able purchase one for $5 from the South Central Alliance of Churches.
Until Nov. 21, donations are being accepted at the nine participating local churches, including the 109’s University Christian Church and Trinity Episcopal Church.
The South Central Alliance of Churches is a coalition of congregations in the southwest quadrant of Fort Worth and serving people in these three ZIP codes.
Program Director Opel Smith said the South Central Alliance of Churches has been collecting and donating Thanksgiving baskets for 10 years.
Last year, the South Central Alliance of Churches distributed around 300 bags, she said.
“I’ve seen people come in tears because $5 saved their Thanksgiving,” Smith said.
Turkeys are purchased wholesale by the South Central Alliance of Churches and people can shop for specific items from the grocery list. All items can be bought for $15, she said.
Last year, Trinity Episcopal Church donated 375 bags and is on track to do about the same this year, Communications Manager Sarah Martinez said.
The bags donated by Trinity Episcopal Church are also donated to McLean 6th Grade, Martinez said.
University Christian Church will donate 200 bags this year, communications manager Patricia Poling said.
People who want to donate within the 109 can leave donations at the Trinity Episcopal Church’s office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday or 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Fridays, Martinez said.
University Christian Church is accepting donations at the reception desk during the week or after Sunday services in The Arches. People can make a financial donation online, according to the church’s website.
Individuals will be able to pick up their Thanksgiving dinners on Nov. 22 between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., Smith said.
