The No. 10 Horned Frog Equestrian team recorded a 1-1 split this weekend in the final home tournament of the season at Turning Point Ranch in Springtown, Texas.
The Frogs began the tournament against two top 10 programs on a high note, knocking off the No. 5 Fresno State Bulldogs 12-6 on Saturday. The Frogs outscored the Bulldogs 6-2 in Hunt Seat events, splitting Equitation over Fences 2-2 before recording a 4-0 edge in Equitation on the Flat, propelled by a score of 79 by junior Carly Barnett.
The Bulldogs beat out the Frogs 2-3 in the Western Side event, but TCU rebounded in the Horsemanship event when first-years Laska Anderson and Josie Mootz, sophomore Marah Huston and senior Megan McMullen all won their points for a 4-1 victory, securing the upset for the Frogs.
“It all came together today and that is the direction we will continue heading,” TCU Head Coach and Program Director Haley Schoofield said. “Our seniors were all outstanding and we had impressive rides from the younger side of our team as well.”
The team honored its eight seniors following the victory over the Bulldogs, as the tournament marked the final home event for the group in their TCU careers.
It was a different story for the Frogs on Sunday, however, as the team was unable to squeeze past the No. 8 South Carolina Gamecocks in a 9-8 defeat.
The Frogs once again prevailed in the Hunt Seat event with a 5-3 win, including an 84 point from senior Kari Hancock in Equitation over the Fences. The Hunt Seat performance however wasn’t enough to overcome a one-point performance in the Western Side and a two-point outing in Horsemanship. The Frogs exited the weekend 4-5 overall following the defeat.
Despite the loss to close out the tournament, Schoolfield kept a positive outlook as the team prepares for the closing chapter of the season.
“I maintain that I am very encouraged by the direction this young team is headed,” Schoolfield said. “Our three MOP’s had incredible trips and our hunt seat team rode extremely well as a whole.”
The Frogs return to action when they take on Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Feb. 17.
