The Horned Frogs finished with great results this weekend at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championship in Ames, Iowa.

“I thought that we performed well this weekend,” said director of track and field Darryl Anderson.

Track Events  

Sophomore Brenley Goertzen was crowned Big 12 Champion in the women’s 5,000 km race with a school record time of 16:02.80, over 20 seconds faster than the previous record time of 16:23.55 set by Mary Kinyanjui in 2004. Goertzen also grabbed a bronze medal in the 3,000-meter race, with a time of 9:23.01.

Senior Tiffany Terry took home silver in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:19.54.

Senior Makaila Flannigan placed fifth in the Pentathlon, setting a new school record of 3,744 points. She was the first person to medal this weekend.

“For a lot of these athletes, it was their first Big 12 meet, and I think that they will get a lot better as we move to the outdoor season,” said Anderson.

In her first Big 12 meet appearance, sophomore Brittney Trought took home bronze in the 60-meter hurdle finals behind a time of 8.34.

Sophomore Kayla Heard placed fourth in the 400-meter finals, clocking in at a personal best of 53.2

For the men, sophomore Derrick Mokaleng made his first Big 12 appearance and took home bronze in the 600-yard run behind a time of 1:09.54. Junior Kevin McClanahan placed fourth, clocking in at 1:09.59.

In the 60-meter dash finals, junior Jalen Miller placed fifth with a time of 6.79.

Sophomore Darrion Flowers notched a seventh place finish with a time of 21.69 in the men’s 200-meter dash finals.

To close out the meet, the women’s 4×400-meter relay team of Terry, Heard, and sophomores Lexi Aitken and Jaden Davis placed seventh with a season best time of 3:40.55. For the men, the 4×400-meter relay squad of Mokaleng, McClanahan, and freshmen Jostyn Andrews and Ryan Champlin placed sixth with a time of 3:10.33.

Field Events

Freshman Isaiah Rogers made his first Big 12 meet appearance a memorable one by grabbing a bronze medal with a mark of 55 feet, 7.75 inches (16.96 meters).

Sophomore Lebogang Maloka and junior Scotty Newton placed in the long jump. Maloka placed seventh with a mark of 23 feet, 6.25 inches (7.17 meters) and Newton eighth with a mark of 23 feet, 4 inches (7.11 meters). Newton also placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 52 feet, 5.50 inches (15.99 meters).

Sophomore Justin Sanchez placed eighth in the weight throw with a distance of 59 feet (17.98 meters).

On the women’s side, senior Nafissatou Boixel and junior Briona Oliver placed in the long jump for the women. Boixel finished in seventh with a mark of 19 feet 9.50 inches (6.03 meters) and Oliver placed eighth recording a mark of 19 feet 6 inches (5.94 meters).
