TCU earned one last home game to cap off their historic first season under head coach Jamie Dixon, winning their 21st game, Sunday after an overtime road win over the Iowa Hawkeyes, 94-92.
The Horned Frogs have now recorded two postseason victories in the same year for the first time since the 2005 NIT quarterfinals.
Their 21st victory, the most since winning 21 games in their NIT campaign of 2004-05, are a nine-game improvement for TCU from last season.
The Horned Frogs prevailed in their second-round NIT contest without starting point guard Jaylen Fisher, who suffered a season-ending wrist injury.
TCU was led by five double-digit scorers, with forward Vladimir Brodziansky and guard Alex Robinson Jr. taking charge. Both contributed a team-high of 19 points, with Robinson adding 11 assists, a career-high.
After overtime began, the Horned Frogs went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to six, 92-86, on a couple of Desmond Bane free throws with 24 seconds left to play. Bane, making his first start since Dec. 7 at SMU, started in place of Fisher and finished with 13 points and four assists.
TCU guard Brandon Parrish played in his 133rd career game, extending his TCU record.
Parrish tied a season high with four 3-pointers while totaling 14 points. He was 4-of-6 behind the three-point line and 5-of-7 shooting overall from the field.
The Frogs led 44-40 at halftime and improved their record to 18-2 this season when ahead at the break. TCU also recorded one of their best on both sides of the ball this year, shooting 51% from the field and forcing the Hawkeyes into 17 turnovers, including 12 in the first 20 minutes.
The turnovers were a big factor in the Horned Frog victory with TCU scoring 28 points off of Iowa’s 17 turnovers.
TCU also dominated in the paint, as they outscored the Hawkeyes inside 52-30.
