The Horned Frog Equestrian team did not beat the competition at the Big 12 Championship this weekend, falling to Baylor and Oklahoma State at the Willis Family Equestrian Center in Waco, Texas.
The Frogs kept things close with both of their opponents in the tournament, but dropped a 10-9 heartbreaker in round one to the top-seeded Bears on Friday before falling 11-8 to the Cowboys in round two Saturday.
Friday’s action against Baylor began with the Frogs dropping the Reining and Fences competition 3-2 before rebounding with a 3-1 victory in Horsemanship to tie things up at 7. Baylor, however, emerged victorious in the decisive Flat competition, posting a 3-2 victory to edge out the Frogs, 10-9.
The Frogs wouldn’t fare any better against Oklahoma State the next day. Despite impressive rides from seniors Kari Hancock and Molly Peddicord, TCU was bested 3-2 in the Flat, putting the Frogs down early once again. The team responded with a dominant 4-1 victory in Equitation over the Fence, only to get swept 4-0 in Horsemanship en route to an eventual 11-8 loss.
The senior riders for the Horned Frogs finished the weekend with a 10-7 overall record, going 5-4 against Baylor and 5-3 against Oklahoma State.
The Frogs return to action in April, competing in the NCEA Championship back in Waco. The event will take place April 11-14.
