Wings were eaten, money was raised and  the TCU community was at the forefront of Pi Beta Phi’s second annual philanthropy event: Pi Phi Gives You Wings.

The event benefited the Pi Beta Phi Foundation and promoted the importance of literacy. Over $900 was raised, according to the Vice President of Philanthropy Hannah Kintzinger.

Kintzinger said she was pleased with the event.

“The participation that we had at this event is really awesome,” Kintzinger said. “It’s so great to see the TCU community come out and support us and rally together for a great cause.”

Pi Beta Phi Foundation site says that one in four children are illiterate.

First-year chemistry and psychology double major Krupa Patel said the event was a great way to support Pi Phi’s philanthropy while having fun.

The event included two brackets: a male and female bracket. Seventeen teams paid the $60 entrance fee and competed in the competition.

Kappa Alpha Theta won the female bracket and Kappa Sigma won the male bracket.

First-year nursing major Molly Ricchiuti expressed her gratitude after her victory.

“I’d like to thank my parents for teaching me to have a strong stomach,” Ricchiuti said. “I’d like to thank my siblings for the ability to reach things fast before anyone else and I’d like to thank Buffalo Bros for delicious wings that are now upsetting my stomach.”

Pi Phi also hosts two other philanthropy events to promote literacy: Pie a Pi Phi and Dodge the Arrow.

Pie a Pi Phi is an annual event where its members volunteer to get a pie thrown in their face to raise money. Dodge the Arrow is an annual dodge ball tournament where sorority and fraternity members compete against one another.
