TCU Theatre to perform ‘musical thriller’ Sweeney Todd

The TCU Theatre Department will be performing the musical, “Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” this week.

Sweeney Todd is based on a 19th century melodrama about a London barber who is convicted by a corrupt judge. After escaping jail, he changes his name to Sweeney Todd, seeks revenge on the judge and soon discovers that his wife is dead.

The onstage cast of Sweeney Todd includes 27 TCU students with an additional 49 students on the back stage crew.

Stephen Sondheim, the mind behind the lyrics and music of the production, called the show “a musical thriller.” Director of the TCU show, Harry Parker, agrees.

The main character, Sweeney Todd, is played by Logan Lane, a junior musical theatre major who is excited about the fascinating character he gets to portray on stage.

“I am most excited about the opportunity to play a role that is so unlike anything I have ever done before,” he said.

Lane is also looking forward to other TCU students seeing the show.

“It is a musical that everyone can respond to,” he said. “It warns us of the danger of wanting revenge and not being able to let things go and it also makes a very powerful statement about the evils of corruption and greed.”

Parker said Sweeney Todd is a gruesome and thrilling horror story of blood and revenge, so students should “come prepared to see a thrilling horror story, but also one with a conscience.”

Sweeney Todd will be performed on Wednesday through Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2:30 p.m..

All performances are located at the Scott Theatre inside the Fort Worth Community Arts Center. Tickets are available here.
