The Frog Family spent the day volunteering to help Hurricane Harvey victims.

Approximately 80 volunteers filed in and out of the Brown-Lupton University Union auditorium last week, donating their time and efforts to help those in need after the devastation of Hurricane Harvey.

The TCU community donated an assortment of items used to create hygiene kits that will be given to evacuees staying at local shelters. These items included shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, deodorant and combs. They also were in need of disposable razors, backpacks and gallon-sized plastic storage bags.

There was a total of 106 hygiene-kit bags made for women and 109 bags made for men during the five-hour event.

“Within our community here at TCU, we are just an incredibly compassionate and giving, caring community,” said Vanessa Roberts Bryan, assistant dean of Student Development Services.

Even though TCU wasn’t directly affected by the hurricane, there are almost 900 students who are from the affected areas.

“To be an ethical leader and a responsible citizen, you have to work together as a team or as a community to kind of spearhead efforts and then to create positive change in the world,” Roberts Bryan said.

Volunteers wrote positive notes that were put in the bags as a reminder that TCU cares.

At the end of the packing event, the volunteers loaded up a truck full of the donations.

The donations were sent to Tarrant Area Food Bank, because the Goodwill warehouse was full. The items are being sorted and will be sent off to local evacuee shelters.

Non-perishable food items and cases of water can also be donated to Tarrant Area Food Bank.
